The Family Move
There are many ways to make moving easier on your family when you have young children – here are a few things you can do:
1. Children will adjust better if they have a lot of time to prepare for a big change, so involve them early and involve them a lot.
2. Children are natural ‘explorers’,so give them a ‘job’ when you’re touring homes (such as “count the closets”).
3. Walk around the new neighbourhood, find the playgrounds, and let them absorb the sights, sounds and smells.
4. Keep your daily routines as much as possible as pack up – younger children (under 5) often find security in family and routines even more than in places.
5. Consider working childcare, movers, and/or cleaning costs into your moving budget.
6. Let kids help pack their stuff, and explain that their toys will come back out of the boxes in the new house.
7. As much as possible, make your move a family adventure!
